Drinking Water For Weight Loss And Good Health


Even though scientists have disputed if water has any effect on weight loss, about 59% of adults in the US believe it actually does, and these are some of the reasons why. If you are one of those looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, why not try using water to help you lose weight?

Here are a few reasons why you need to see water as an assistant in weight loss.

Stay hydrated, eat less

When you are dehydrated you eat more. The reason is we want to eat food more than we want to drink water. Anytime you’re hungry, you pick up your food the instant the signal is sent but we tend to pay no attention our thirst signal until it becomes unbearable for us. Nearly 75% of us are dehydrated at any one time. So make sure you take some water when you find yourself craving food in between meals.

TIP for staying hydrated: Drink water (1 glass) around half an hour before each meal, but not closer. Drinking too close to your meal dilutes your stomach acid.

Drinking water reduces calories

Drinking water on a regular basis prevents you from drinking high calorie drinks that will add more to your weight. Instead of water we tend to substitute it with milk, tea, flavored coffee, fruit juices, and soft drinks. These drinks are very high in calories so by switching to water, you of course consume fewer calories.

Increased energy

Even being a bit dehydrated can make you lose energy and be slow and we tend to choose high calorie snacks to motivate us. Drinking water helps to increase energy and you will want to use it for your workout and exercise which helps to decrease your weight and you will consume fewer calories.

Water boosts your metabolism

Drinking more water (particularly cold water) boost the energy you expend even while you rest – up to 400 kilojoules for every two liters of water you drink.

TIP: When you don’t feel like drinking plain old water, just add some lemon for flavor, or a bit of fruit juice (10%).

Healthy Joints

Every now and then, we feel like our joints need to get some lubrication and water helps to do this. Water is a major component of synovial fluid, which is found in the joints, and helps to lessen friction and keep your joints from getting injured.

TIP: Eat foods that have a high water concentration. Grapefruit contains 91% water. Cucumber and lettuce contain 96% water. Watermelon and strawberries contain 92% water.

Your liver helps to eliminate waste from your body and also metabolizes fat. Drinking water habitually helps the liver to carry out its functions without disturbance.

Human beings are creatures of habit and going around a water bottle everyday can help you to take good care of your body as you set your goal to drink a minimum of two liters of water everyday. You will start to slowly become conscious of your food intake and exercises.

TIP: When you have a headache don’t always rush to get an aspirin, take some water instead and you might find that headache was just your body telling you to take some water.

Muscle build up

We sometimes discover our muscles aren’t as strong as they look and the reason is because dehydration causes loss of muscle strength and slow muscle response. Staying hydrated before and after your exercise and workout helps with muscle growth and response.

TIP: Being thirsty is an indicator that you are dehydrated. Make sure you drink water at regular intervals, and don’t wait till you are thirsty.

We are always told to drink 2 liters of water every day ( this is equivalent to eight glasses of water). This, however, completely depends on the individual. For example, people who are physically active and sweat a lot may require more water than those who are not as active. Don’t go over the top with your water consumption, as it can cause water toxicity, which can cause death. Maintain the safe threshold of two liters of water (67 ounces).

Don’t always go for the high energy foods or candy to boost you in a day, as they help only to increase your weight and make you lose the energy you need shortly after. Drinking water the way you should will keep you healthy, as your body will get rid of waste efficiently and you will never be at a loss of energy when you need some to go through the day.
